Program overview

What this program prepares you to do

From manually executing test cases to building automated suites that scale with any product team.

This programme turns a strong manual tester into an engineer who writes tests other people can maintain. Automation is treated as software: version controlled, reviewed, run in a pipeline and expected to stay green.

You write code from the first module and every submission is reviewed by the Automation Lead Mentor, who leaves written feedback the way a senior engineer would on a pull request.

The honest lesson runs through the whole programme: knowing when not to automate is worth as much as knowing how.

Who this is for

  • You test manually and want technical leverage
  • You have written little or no production code and are willing to
  • You want automation that survives contact with a real codebase

Outcomes

  • Write maintainable UI and API automation in a modern framework
  • Structure a suite with page objects, fixtures and clean data setup
  • Run tests in CI on every merge and diagnose failures fast
  • Choose tooling on evidence and defend the choice
  • Judge automation return on investment honestly
Syllabus

Learn by building, module by module

01
Module 1

Programming foundations for testers

Enough language, tooling and Git to write tests without guessing.

  • •Language fundamentals for test code
  • •Version control, branching and pull requests
  • •Project setup, dependencies and test runners
  • •Reading and debugging someone else's test

Project: A first automated test suite committed and reviewed on a pull request.

02
Module 2

Tool selection and framework design

Selenium, Playwright and Cypress compared on real criteria, then a structure that holds.

  • •Framework comparison and selection criteria
  • •Page object and screenplay patterns
  • •Locator strategy and resilience to redesign
  • •Configuration, environments and secrets handling

Project: A framework skeleton with a documented tooling decision.

03
Module 3

Writing tests that survive

The maintenance problem. Flakiness, waits, isolation and test data.

  • •Deterministic waits and eliminating flakiness
  • •Test independence and state management
  • •Test data creation and teardown
  • •Assertions, reporting and useful failure messages

Project: A stable suite that passes repeatedly under review, reruns included.

04
Module 4

API and service level automation

Pushing coverage down the stack, where tests are faster and steadier.

  • •Automating API requests and contract checks
  • •Mocking, stubbing and service virtualisation
  • •Balancing the test pyramid deliberately
  • •Authentication in automated flows

Project: An API automation layer integrated with the UI suite.

05
Module 5

CI, CD and reporting

Tests nobody runs are decoration. Getting the suite into the pipeline.

  • •Pipeline configuration on GitHub Actions or GitLab CI
  • •Parallelisation, sharding and execution time
  • •Reporting, artefacts and failure triage
  • •Quality gates and branch protection

Project: A suite running automatically on every merge, with reporting.

06
Final module

Project week and live defence

You stop consuming the curriculum and produce evidence of it. You automate a real application end to end and justify every automation decision.

  • •Scoping the project brief with your mentor
  • •Working the project through a full cycle, with checkpoints
  • •Preparing the written artefacts a reviewer will read
  • •Presenting and defending your decisions live

Project: A defended automation project, certificate and report card.
