Program overview

What this program prepares you to do

The leadership, people-management, and strategic thinking required to run high-performing QA teams.

Managing testers is a different job from testing, and most test leads are promoted into it without training. This programme covers the management work directly: hiring, one to ones, performance, capacity planning, stakeholder negotiation and reporting upward.

Delivery is case study driven and cohort based, using the frameworks Testify Group runs across its own operations. You bring live situations from your team and work them in the room.

You leave with a hiring rubric, a capacity model, a reporting pack and a coaching approach you have practised rather than read about.

Who this is for

  • You have recently become a test lead or manager
  • You manage testers and were never trained to manage
  • You are preparing for a leadership move in the next year

Outcomes

  • Hire testers against a rubric instead of a gut feeling
  • Run one to ones and performance conversations that change behaviour
  • Plan capacity and test effort against a roadmap
  • Report status and risk to stakeholders credibly
  • Coach a struggling tester back to competence
Syllabus

Learn by building, module by module

01
Module 1

From tester to manager

The shift in what you are paid for, and the habits that must go.

  • •Your new remit and where your time should go
  • •Delegation and resisting the urge to test everything yourself
  • •Team charter, standards and ways of working
  • •Your first ninety days as a lead

Project: A written team charter and a personal time allocation plan.

02
Module 2

Hiring and team structure

Building the team rather than inheriting it.

  • •Role definitions and seniority ladders
  • •Interview design, rubrics and scoring
  • •Onboarding testers properly
  • •Structuring squads and specialisms

Project: A complete hiring pack: role, rubric and interview plan.

03
Module 3

Performance, coaching and difficult conversations

The part of management people avoid until it becomes expensive.

  • •One to ones that produce change
  • •Feedback, goal setting and development plans
  • •Handling underperformance fairly and clearly
  • •Retention and motivation in QA teams

Project: A development plan and a rehearsed difficult conversation.

04

Sizing the work and protecting the timeline with evidence.

  • •Estimation and capacity modelling for testing
  • •Test strategy at portfolio scale
  • •Managing dependencies, environments and vendors
  • •Prioritising when everything is urgent

Project: A capacity model and test plan for a real upcoming delivery.

05
Module 5

Stakeholders and reporting

Being the person leadership believes when they ask if it is ready.

  • •Executive reporting and status packs
  • •Escalation and risk communication
  • •Negotiating scope, time and quality trade offs
  • •Building trust with product and engineering leadership

Project: A stakeholder reporting pack, presented and challenged in class.

06
Final module

Project week and live defence

You stop consuming the curriculum and produce evidence of it. Your project is a leadership plan for the team you actually run.

  • •Scoping the project brief with your mentor
  • •Working the project through a full cycle, with checkpoints
  • •Preparing the written artefacts a reviewer will read
  • •Presenting and defending your decisions live

Project: A defended leadership project, certificate and report card.
