Program overview

What this program prepares you to do

For the leader building, or rebuilding, a quality engineering function from the ground up.

The Blueprint is for the leader who has to answer for quality across products, not inside one team. It is run as an executive cohort: each session works on your own organisation, and you leave with artefacts you can put in front of your board.

The work covers designing a quality function, staffing and structuring it, choosing metrics an executive will act on, and holding influence across engineering, product and commercial teams without formal authority over them.

Peers in the room are senior QA and engineering leaders, and the case material comes from building quality practices across eighteen countries.

Who this is for

  • You own quality across multiple teams or an entire product line
  • You are building or rebuilding a quality function
  • You need to argue quality in commercial language

Outcomes

  • Design a quality engineering function and its operating model
  • Choose and report metrics that change executive decisions
  • Build a costed quality roadmap with a defensible business case
  • Exercise cross functional influence without authority
  • Present quality position and risk at board level
Syllabus

Learn by building, module by module

01
Module 1

The operating model

What a quality function is for, and the shapes it can take.

  • •Centralised, embedded and hybrid quality models
  • •Mandate, remit and decision rights
  • •Maturity assessment of your current function
  • •Designing the target state honestly

Project: A maturity assessment and target operating model for your organisation.

02
Module 2

Metrics and executive reporting

Numbers that survive scrutiny and drive action.

  • •Quality metrics tied to business outcomes
  • •Leading against lagging indicators
  • •Dashboards and board level reporting

Project: A one page quality dashboard and the narrative behind it.

03
Module 3

Structure, people and capability

Staffing the model you designed.

  • •Team shape, seniority mix and role definitions
  • •Hiring rubrics and capability frameworks
  • •Build, borrow or buy decisions
  • •Succession and retention of scarce skills

Project: A staffing and capability plan with costs attached.

04
Module 4

The commercial case for quality

Translating quality work into money, risk and time.

  • •Cost of quality and cost of failure modelling
  • •Business case construction and investment framing
  • •Regulatory, contractual and reputational risk

Project: A funded business case for a quality investment.

05
Module 5

  • •Handling resistance from engineering and commercial leads
  • •Sustaining change past the launch

Project: A change plan for one real quality problem in your organisation.

06
Final module

Project week and live defence

You stop consuming the curriculum and produce evidence of it. Your project is the quality blueprint for your own organisation.

  • •Scoping the project brief with your mentor
  • •Working the project through a full cycle, with checkpoints
  • •Preparing the written artefacts a reviewer will read
  • •Presenting and defending your decisions live
